My program investigates the host/pathogen interactions that mediate rapidly progressive, life-threatening necrotizing infections caused by Gram positive bacteria, including group A streptococcus (“the flesh-eating bacterium”), drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus (“the superbug”) and various species of clostridia involved in gas gangrene. Specifically, my work examines the roles of bacterial exotoxins and the host response in the pathogenesis of these infections, and how antibiotics influence these interactions.
